ADNOC Requirements vs ASME Compliance for Quick Opening Closures

 

When specifying a quick opening closure for an ADNOC oil and gas project, two terms often appear together: ADNOC requirements and ASME compliance. Although they are related to equipment selection, they do not mean the same thing.

What Is ASME Compliance?

ASME provides recognized engineering requirements for pressure equipment. For quick opening closures, applicable ASME Section VIII provisions may form part of the design basis.

ADNOC's published pressure-vessel specification states that quick-actuating closures specified on the equipment datasheet shall be designed according to ASME Section VIII Division 1, UG-35.2 or the specified Division 2 requirements.

What Are ADNOC Requirements?

ADNOC requirements are project and company requirements that can cover technical specifications, supplier qualification, quality documentation, HSE expectations, inspection and other procurement conditions.

ADNOC's supplier process includes registration followed by pre-qualification for relevant product or work groups. The evaluation can consider supplier experience, quality management systems, HSE documentation and supporting technical information.

Therefore, an ASME-compliant quick opening closure should not automatically be described as ADNOC approved.

What Safety Features Matter?

A QOC used on pressure equipment should provide controlled operation and protection against premature opening. Depending on the design and service, this may include:

  • Pressure-warning devices

  • Safety interlocks

  • Tell-tale vents

  • Positive locking systems

  • Controlled pressure release

  • Proper gasket and sealing arrangements

ADNOC's pressure-vessel specification specifically addresses safety bleeders and pressure-safety devices for quick-opening closures.

How Should Buyers Specify a QOC?

A technical review should cover:

Pressure: Design and operating pressure.

Temperature: Operating and design temperature.

Size: Nominal diameter and vessel configuration.

Material: Compatibility with the process fluid and environment.

Closure type: Seg-Band, Clamp or Swing Bolt.

Code: Applicable ASME requirements.

Documentation: Drawings, calculations, inspection and testing records.

Project requirements: Applicable ADNOC specifications and procurement requirements.
